The Race to the Starting Line and Author Max Brault
Max Brault is more than an accessibility consultant; he’s a changemaker.
Living with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a rare genetic condition that weakens muscles over time, Max knows firsthand the barriers people with disabilities face. He’s the force behind Nīewe’s Accessibility Consulting Service, President/CEO of Accommodation Councillors of Canada Network (Accnet), and founder of The Max Brault SMA Foundation. As a senior federal civil servant, he launched the Persons with Disabilities Champions and Chairs Committee and helped shape the Accessible Canada Act.
From a cover concept to a movement, this project proved one thing: when creativity meets purpose, barriers don’t stand a chance.
The magic began when Jennifer—our book-loving, publishing-savvy leader—met Max. What started as a simple request for a book cover became a full-scale creative collaboration touching every corner of our studio: print, video, web.
Morgan and Bree designed four striking covers—two about equality and breaking barriers, two centred on the wheelchair. Max chose one that didn’t yet match his electric chair, so we made it right.
Christi rebuilt Max’s entire e-commerce site from scratch using Shopify and Klaviyo, transforming it into a hub for book sales, event promotion, and the Challenge Barriers feature. This is a place where readers share real actions they’ve taken to make Canada more inclusive. One Ottawa reader’s story even led a company to overhaul its hiring policies for greater accessibility.

In closing, we also wish to recognize Bree’s contribution as the designer of the book cover, a lasting reflection of her talent and impact in the field. We all honor her contribution and extend our deepest condolences. May she rest in peace.
